Advanced Deepwater Protection for Titanium Stress Joints
SubTRON® is a high-performance bromobutyl rubber (BBR) protection system engineered specifically for titanium stress joints (TSJs) used in deepwater offshore risers and subsea production systems. Developed for some of the world's most demanding offshore environments, SubTRON provides a durable environmental barrier that protects critical titanium components against seawater exposure, extreme hydrostatic pressure, and hydrogen ingress throughout the service life of the field.
Engineered for Depth. Designed to Protect.
Titanium is widely selected for stress joints because of its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and outstanding corrosion resistance. However, in deepwater subsea systems utilizing cathodic protection, atomic hydrogen can be generated at the metal surface. Under certain conditions, hydrogen may diffuse into the titanium and form titanium hydrides, reducing ductility and fracture toughness and potentially affecting the long-term structural integrity of highly stressed components.
Low-Permeability Barrier Protection
SubTRON addresses hydrogen ingress by utilizing a factory-vulcanized bromobutyl rubber barrier that is chemically bonded to the titanium surface.
Bromobutyl rubber exhibits exceptionally low permeability to gases, moisture, and hydrogen-containing species, significantly reducing the transport of seawater and dissolved gases to the titanium interface.
Compared with conventional neoprene-based protection systems, SubTRON provides superior barrier performance for applications where long-term environmental isolation is critical.
SubTRON Protection System
Built for Dynamic Offshore Service
Engineered for dynamic offshore service, SubTRON retains the flexibility required to accommodate continuous bending, cyclic fatigue loading, installation stresses, and operational movement without compromising adhesion or environmental protection.
Its robust elastomeric construction provides reliable performance in deepwater environments where hydrostatic pressures routinely exceed 2,000 psi (13.8 MPa).
